Decorating means resisting

This dissertation looks at the Art Nouveau movement using the example of the city of Nancy, seeking to understand the place and role of ornamentation in this city's architecture. Based on the study of the École de Nancy and major figures of the movement, it analyses ornamentation, not only as a decorative element, but as a means of expressing a relationship with living things and the society of its time. By comparing the ideas of Art Nouveau with critiques like those made by Adolf Loos, this work questions how the decoration was perceived, rejected or transformed. My dissertation thus explores how these principles can still fuel current reflection on space, use and the perceptible relationship to architecture.
