This dissertation questions anemoia, nostalgia for a time or place you have never experienced, based on personal experiences and a corpus of contemporary images and news. It continues a diffuse quest, which came to mind two years ago when writing the dissertation. By combining phenomenology, sense theory and aesthetics of atmospheres, it shows that this emotion arises from an agreement or misalignment between body, memory and atmosphere, and proposes to specify the spatial forms thereof. In a present saturated with archives, ruins, “backrooms” and liminal spaces, anemoia becomes a sign of a need for refuge and continuity. The dissertation then defends an interior architecture as a “psychological medium”, a practice of listening and tuning oriented towards care and care ethics.
