A musical instrument represents a paradox. It is a technical device that shapes that which is impalpable: emotion and time. From cosmological rituals, a reflection of the hidden world, to the technical excellence of the Renaissance, the object vanishes to turn into an extension of the soul, and merge with the body. But what happens when electricity breaks the physical bond with the material?
This dissertation queries the transformation of an object that dematerialises to occupy space. When the gesture separates from the sound stream, the instrument ceases to be an object and becomes a presence: the entire space becomes its new body infused with vibrancy.
