Sargassum, eritaj lanmè

The vast amounts of sargassum washing up on shores in the Antilles observed since 2011 is an environmental, economic and social scourge reflecting a global climate emergency. Forming part of a research and creation approach, this dissertation questions how a phenomenon perceived as a nuisance could become a beneficial resource for the population, and how design can become a mediation between the living, territories and communities. At the intersection between ecology, science and design, the research is based on my various journeys I have embarked on observing and experimenting, as well as analysis of ancestral and contemporary artisan skills, while examining the different stages of material transformation and how it is manufactured.
