This study aims to unravel the imagery that hinders Asian women, particularly those from East Asia, placing them in a disadvantageous position. This situation is closely linked to the fantasised perceptions of the Asian continent, and the exotic and Eurocentric visions surrounding its cultures. This imagery is also rooted in the misogyny that is deeply inherent in the Confucian and patriarchal societies of East Asia. Our analyses detail the different representations of “the Asian woman”, the construction of these representations, as well as their consequences. In addition, we will examine the tensions resulting from gender inequalities, which have persisted for millennia.
