This dissertation talks about refuge.
How does the mountain refuge or hut allow people to think about their relationship to nature and their environment?
Drawing on studies of texts such as Gaston Bachelard’s Poetics of Space and analyses of architectural projects, I explore refuge in the broad sense of the term: as a shelter, to protect ourselves from far too vast a world, a system on its last legs, an inhospitable nature that is difficult to master; but also in order to be somewhere quiet, to think, imagine and self-explore. The question of finding refuge goes beyond just shelter, it pushes the mind to find a part of itself that connects us to the world.
