“Mecca Gate”, Jeddah and its old centre, the Al-Balad district, have a rich architectural heritage. The builders of its uniquely styled homes have succeeded in integrating social needs and climate data with local materials thanks to rawasheen. These projecting windows, true “guardians of the past”, have been designed to create comfortable living spaces. While some houses have been destroyed, mainly due to economic development, urbanisation and the introduction of new building materials, those that remain have gained recognition as UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 2014.
