FUNGI: for most people, the word resonates as a food, or bacteria, yet they are so much more. They are the most powerful organisms on the planet. They are essential to our survival and that of the ecosystem. They are everywhere: in the soil, oceans, trees, food and even on our skin. We come into contact with them every day and at any time. Ever since I was a child, I have been intrigued and fascinated by these living beings, seeing unexpected powers in their varying colours, textures, shapes and smells. This dissertation attests to my different encounters with fungi. Encounters that have given me an entirely new insight into the living world, by taking the time to observe, analyse and understand it.
