Beyond the “functional lighting” brought by the industrial revolution, today in stage arts there is a focus on “emotional lighting” and “sensation lighting”. Can lighting be used differently to light actors as they perform? How can it become a substance, dialogue or architecture on contemporary stages? Can we create a more environmentally-responsible theatre for the future? This is what we are going to find out in this dissertation, with help from professionals such as Philippe Almon, lighting designer, and Frédéric Hocké, director.
